No Sew Curtains and DIY Window Treatment Ideas

Let’s talk curtains. Do you have them? I don’t, unless you count a shower curtain. I do have a few bamboo shades, but mostly, I don’t use window coverings because I live in the woods. A reader recently asked me if I have a simple DIY pattern for curtains. As a green home design enthusiast, I realized that curtains haven’t interested me that much. So, I asked a master seamstress and fellow design lover – my mom, about curtains. As you may know, I have lots of DIY chops, but sewing isn’t one of them. My mom always offers to help with decorating and mending projects that involve sewing.

Much to my surprise, mom says you don’t need to know how to sew to make curtains. Better yet, curtains and rods can be made from recycled and natural materials. Sheets and tablecloths make fine curtains. Curtain rods are easily created from decorative branches. DIY Decorating With Nautical Knots

If you are one of those people who think that ropes are just for jumping, think again. Rope, sale which is called "line" when used on boats, is essential to every sailor. Ropes are also a versatile DIY material on and off a boat. I just came back from vacation and spent a considerable amount of time on a boat. My husband is a boater, and when he has some free time he enjoys practicing tying nautical knots. If you’ve ever spent any time around boats, you know that strong knots can make or break a day out on the water.

DIY Natural Stone Knobs

"A stone is ingrained with geological and historical memories, ”says master stone artist and environmentalist" ~ Andy Goldsworthy. If you are like me, you pick up stones and rocks to remember places, to connect with nature and because you like the “feel” of stones. From almost every view inside and outside of my home, you can spy a cluster of stones or just a lone beauty here and there.

Stones have been used for many years in spiritual healings and for meditative purposes. Since stones come from the Earth, many believe their properties possess an abundance of powers from promoting good health to acquiring prosperity.

Do you collect stones? It is easy to make your own stone knobs for drawers or cabinets using the materials and technique below. The natural color and texture of the stones, along with the size of your drawer or cabinet door, will determine your unique one-of-a-kind knob.

DIY Natural Stone Knobs

Materials:

Rocks – beach, river Drawer pull(s) – a small metal cylinder with a flat top surface – one that will withstand repeated stress pulling. Glue – we used Gorilla glue Coarse Sand Paper

What to do:

1. Collect rocks – select size and shape according to drawer or cabinet size. 2. Wash and dry thoroughly. 3. If the draw pull is smooth, sand the end of the drawer pull where it will be glued to the rock to rough it up. 4. Sand the rock on the side that the drawer pull will attach to. 5. Glue the stone to the drawer pull. 6. Let dry and screw into drawer.
